Page 4 Modeling a Sailboat: Lighting and Rendering

Select the anchor wenches and give them a black material. Shown selected below.

Select the anchor ribs and give them a dark gray material. Shown selected below.

Let's see, I think that's about it. Just a couple of settings to mention that you may need to change. For first thing is the stand of the model which you can Merge from the file 'stand.3dm' or you can check out the stand file after saving this one and build your own. You may need to reapply the texture and bump map from the textures directory stand.jpg. See the Option: section at the bottom of the page for further explanation.

The second thing is that the render settings are not saved with the file. Go to the Render Options dialog and change the antialiasing to Good and render mesh to Smooth & Slower and the Map size: offset 4.0. The default of .75 will cause the shadows on the sail to look not good. Change the background color to black.

Option: Another way to approach working with textures is to place objects with the same material on separate layers. This is especially true if you are using Rhino version1. Rhino version 1 will probably not find the texture maps you applied if you open your file on another computer because the directory path will be different. With Rhino version 1.1 the texture maps can be placed in a subdirectory of Rhino called 'textures' and if Rhino can't find the texture on the original path it will use a image with same name in the Rhino/texture directory. This way you can copy your texture maps to the texture sub-directory in Rhino and the textures will be found.

For a final version of this boat with all the materials applied open the boat11.3dm on the CD-ROM boat/boat11.3dm. If you have Rhino version 1 you will need to re- apply the textured materials.

To do this copy the texture directory ( Boat/textures ) from the CD-Rom to your Rhino directory.

With boat11.3dm hit SelLayer and select the 'Ashen' layer

Hit Properties and for the 'Ashen' layer give the objects the 'Ashen.jpg' for Texture and Bump.

Repeat the above proceedures for the 'stand' layer giving the objects the 'stand.jpg' Texture and Bump.

Repeat the above proceedures for the 'Hull wood' layer giving the objects the 'Ashen2.jpg' Texture and 'Woodgrov3.tga' Bump.

Repeat the above proceedures for the 'Floor' layer giving the objects the 'plnkspne.tga' Texture.

If you are using Rhino version 1.1 all you will need to do is copy the texture directory ( Boat/textures ) from the CD-Rom to your Rhino directory.
